weird book, weirder reaction

So I've reintroduced myself (and the kids) to the public library and I have been reading those books that I kind of wanted to try but don't want to buy. I have a few paperbooks by C. J. Cherryh, so I thought I'd read some others by her. Well, for the first time in my entire life I could not finish a book. And not because it was bad; in fact, I'm still dying to know how it finishes, but I just couldn't keep reading it! Gist of it is that this research lab has figured out how to a) clone people and b) recreate their life experiences to virtually duplicate existing people. So this one brilliant lady dies and they decide to recreate her -- but her childhood was full of tragedy and they recreate every brutal minute of it.

Now, another book by this author had been full of violence, people dying needlessly, rape, gangs and war, and it was part of the story and that was fine -- but this, with a child being put through this mental trauma on purpose, just because some lab researchers wanted to recreate a bitch-lady... well, I was absolutely shattered.

So I stopped reading the book, took it back to the library. Weird.

OK - this sounds really negative about C. J. Cherryh's books, but I did enjoy them; she's an amazing story-teller. Just don't get too emotionally involved, is my advice :-)
